How AI upscaling works
Ordinary resizing interpolates by averaging nearby pixel colors to fill in the new pixels, so no real detail is added and edges end up blurry. This tool instead runs a lightweight ESRGAN-family AI model (esrgan-slim) directly in your browser using TensorFlow.js.
When you pick a resolution option like 1440p or 4K, it upscales with AI up to the target size (measured by the long edge), then precisely downsizes any excess with the canvas to land exactly on that size.
When would I need this?
Useful when you need to print or display an old or small photo at a larger size, show a low-resolution image on a big screen like a wallpaper, or bring back as much detail as possible from a photo where only a small copy survives. We wrote an honest breakdown of what AI upscaling can and can't actually do — read it here. Curious about the right wallpaper size for your monitor's resolution? Frequently Asked Questions
How much can I enlarge an image?
It supports 2x and 4x enlargement, plus resizing to 1440p or 4K resolution. The AI model can only double an image per pass, so it chains up to two passes internally (for 4x); the resolution options that need more than that are only selectable when the original image is already large enough.
Why is there an image size limit?
The AI model runs its calculations directly in your browser, so a very large image would take a long time or could freeze the browser. Only images up to 1000px on each side are supported — for larger images, shrink them first with the image compressor.
Are my uploaded photos stored on a server?
No. All AI computation happens in your browser, and no image is ever sent to a server.
Can a low-resolution image really become high-resolution?
Yes. The AI model analyzes the image's pixel data and infers plausible detail as it enlarges it. Unlike simple stretching, edges and textures come out noticeably sharper.
How long does processing take?
It depends on the image size and the scale or resolution you choose, but since the AI runs directly in your browser, it typically takes anywhere from a few seconds to tens of seconds.
Can I use it without installing anything or signing up?
Yes. No installation or account is required — just use it directly in your browser.
